The Edie Windsor & Thea Spyer archival estate collection of papers and ephemera has been donated to NYU’s Special Collections and Archives. After a 2.5 year long process, almost 100 boxes of papers, photos, ephemera, documents, and correspondence from Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer’s lifetimes were transferred into the custody of NYU Libraries on June 25th 2024. Edie & Thea lived just steps away from the NYU campus for most of their lives together. Edie was an NYU alumna and was awarded NYU’s Eugene J. Keogh Award For Distinguished Public Service, so there could not have been a more suitable home for the collection.
Once the collection is processed, it will be made available to researchers and historians and preserved for posterity. It will stand proudly as a primary resource for all those who wish to learn about LGBTQ+ history, particularly about Edie & Thea’s legacy of philanthropy and activism.
The Edie Windsor & Thea Spyer Foundation would like to thank the team at NYU Libraries Archives & Special Collections, NYU Development & Alumni Relations, and estate archive consultant Chris Sauerwald for shepherding this process to completion.
