NYC Names Corner of Fifth Ave. and Washington Square “Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer Way”

In 2022, New York City’s Community Board 2 decreed that the corner of Fifth Ave. and Washington Square North would be co-named “Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer Way” to permanently commemorate the couple’s 43 years of residency there.

Now, the official unveiling and dedication of the new street sign will take place on Tuesday June 20th 2023 at 3:00 PM at the intersection which will forever bear their names.

Gather with us at the Washington Square Park archway near Fifth Ave. and Washington Square North for a dedication ceremony featuring Erik Bottcher, Christopher Marte and other notable speakers.

From an article published last year when City Council approved the designation:

In a Community Board 2 meeting in April, members spoke glowingly about the possibility of the street co-naming.

“I can’t imagine a more appropriate co-naming for the corner of the home where they lived for more than four decades,” a CB2 board member said when discussing whether the group supported it. “It’s because of the work they did — and Edie Windsor’s fight at the Supreme Court which she won for marriage equality — that my husband and I were able to be legally married.”
