On June 20th, 2023 NY Governor Kathy Hochul made an appearance at the unveiling and dedication ceremony for the new “Edie Windsor and Thea Spyer Way” street sign at the northwest corner of Fifth Ave. and Washington Square in NYC. She was joined by State Attorney General Letitia James, State Assemblymember Rebecca Seawright, former Congressmember Carolyn Maloney, State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal of Manhattan, LGBT Community Center executive director Glennda Testone, Councilmembers Erik Bottcher, Crystal Hudson, Carlina Rivera, Christopher Marte and Edie Windsor’s widow Judith Kasen Windsor.

Also in attendance were David Turley, Ron Zachi, Cathy Marino Thomas, David Turley, Brendan Fay, and The Big Apple Corps Marching Band. A crowd of onlookers gathered just in front of the Washington Square Park archway to observe the speeches and the ceremonial unveiling of the new street sign.

The street co-naming was approved by NYC Community Board 2 in recognition of Edie Windsor and her wife Thea Spyer who met in the West Village and lived in the neighborhood for decades, most recently at the corner of Fifth Ave. and Washington Square Park.

In her speech, Governor Hochul said:

“When you meet people who are so tough, and women who are so willing to break down all the barriers, stand up, and just fight like hell – those are the people I love the most, and that’s who Edie was… And today we benefit and bask in the glory of the freedoms that she made possible for us by standing up so courageously.”
